“I do want to have clear-looking skin but I just don’t have time for it.”
Sounds familiar?
In today’s world, more and more women are rising up, taking up more responsibilities and having different priorities in different seasons of their lives. Skincare might not top those priorities, and there’s nothing wrong with that. After all, there’s only so much one can do in 24 hours.
So, while waiting for skincare companies to evolve and create an ‘all-in-one elixir’ that could save us all from the long list of skincare routine steps, here are my 4 must-haves to start yours.
1. Cleanser
I’ve done a slight twist to the well known Korean double cleansing method. Instead of using an oil-based cleanser followed by a water-based cleanser, I wash my face twice with only a water-based cleanser. I’ve been using Laneige’s Multi Deep-Clean for many years now, and I am still liking it. Like the name itself, this cleanser helps remove makeup pretty efficiently, leaving my face smooth and fresh.

On occasions where I have heavier (and waterproof) makeup on, I’d use a makeup remover before cleansing. The Laneige Perfect Makeup Cleansing Water is my go-to remover as it doesn’t leave an oily feel on your skin.
When travelling or on a long haul flight though, I’d opt for Neutrogena’s Makeup Remover Cleansing Towelette. It is not exactly an environmentally friendly option as the towelettes are individually packed, but it sure is very convenient.
2. Exfoliant (Face Scrub)
Twice or thrice a week, I exfoliate my face using the Alpha-H Micro Cleanse Super Scrub. An exfoliant is important for removing dead cells on our skin which can dull one’s complexion.

An active ingredient of this exfoliant is glycolic acid, which functions not only to treat breakouts but also improves pigmentation on your skin and minimises the appearance of your pores.
But bear in mind that it is not recommended to use an exfoliant daily, as most of them consist of particles (jojoba seeds, grounded volcanic rocks and nut shells) that can cause more damage to your skin with excessive scrubbing.
3. Toner
Also known as the ‘pore-shrinking water’, toners help close up pores after you cleanse. It also removes extra dirt and residue from your face (yes, even after you have washed your face – twice).
My T-zone tends to feel slightly dry most of the time, and Laneige’s Essential Power Skin Refiner – Light works like a charm by keeping it moisturised and non-greasy.

4. Moisturiser
It can be a little tricky when it comes to choosing the right moisturiser, especially if you have oily or acne prone skin. I have combination skin in nature – so I would normally go for products which are oil-free, lightweight and water-based, as it wouldn’t make the oily parts of my face too greasy, but yet it manages to keep the dry parts hydrated.
During the day, Laneige’s Essential Balancing Emulsion – Light is perfect as it quickly absorbs into the skin, and somehow acts like a reset button before I apply any foundation.
During the night, I use a heavier product, Laneige’s Water Bank Hydro Cream Ex as it is able to lock in moisture for up to 24 hours. I believe it is important to keep your skin as hydrated as possible, especially if you are sleeping in an air-conditioned room.

Here you go, as promised, a routine that I’ve been faithfully following for the past 3 years, consisting of only 4 items (and only 3 of them you have to use daily). Because let’s face it, not all of us have the time to follow a 10-step routine (and not burn a hole in our purses).
At the end of the day, simplicity is the ultimate sophistication, and I truly believe in that 🙂
